Bonnie Nixon to Present Vision of Carbon-Free Cargo Handling Terminal
Bonnie Nixon, Director of ESG and Sustainability at Long Beach Container Terminal (LBCT), will be giving a special presentation at the Aquarium of the Pacific’s First Wednesday lecture in February. As a globally recognized expert in sustainability, Nixon will share the latest insights into a significant environmental change happening in our own backyard and how it is impacting our work, homes, and shopping choices.
The story begins with the remarkable evolution of the Port of Long Beach’s cargo handling facility, which is critically important and internationally recognized. Nixon will delve into a 10-year effort to establish the country’s first carbon-neutral cargo handling operation at LBCT. Furthermore, she will discuss how this facility is set to become the world’s first true “net zero” facility of its kind.
Nixon has held several high-profile positions at the forefront of the new low carbon, resource, and just economy. Her impressive career includes roles as Director of Global Sustainability at Hewlett-Packard, Walmart, Mattel, ERM, and two decades of work in environmental infrastructure with regional, state, and federal governments.
In her current role as LBCT’s Director of Sustainability, Nixon is responsible for leading the Net Zero 2030 Strategy, Grants Management, ESG reporting, Stakeholder and Community Outreach, and day-to-day environmental operations. Additionally, she serves as a Professor of Sustainable Supply Chain at Harvard and UCLA. Nixon holds a bachelor’s degree from Penn State, a Masters in Learning Technologies, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Global Leadership and Change in complex supply chains at Pepperdine University.
The presentation will shed light on the promising green technologies available today and those that are still to come. Attendees can expect to gain insights and new perspectives on how social empowerment and people demanding change are reshaping priorities within companies and influencing retail and shopping decisions. The event aims to explore what actions individuals can take to conserve resources for future generations and create a more sustainable tomorrow.
Following the presentation, attendees can enjoy cocktails, conversations, crafts, and music in the Art Gallery. A cash bar will be available.
The event will take place on Wednesday, February 7, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tickets are priced at $5.00 for advance online reservations or $10.00 per ticket at the door on the day of the event (subject to availability).
