Acelen Renewables, a renewable energy company, has chosen Honeywell’s Ecofining™ technology to assist in the production of 20,000 barrels per day of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. The company’s facility in Bahia, Brazil, will process a combination of inedible seed and waste oils to create these fuels.
Honeywell’s Ecofining process, developed in collaboration with Eni SpA, offers a cost-effective solution for converting waste fats, oils, and greases into renewable diesel and SAF. When blended with traditional jet fuel, SAF can potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional fossil fuels. Ecofining has a proven track record, having been used for renewable diesel production since 2013 and SAF production since 2016. It has been instrumental in reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the aviation industry.
Acelen Renewables joins a list of global companies that have licensed Honeywell’s renewable fuels technology, including BP, CVR Energy, Diamond Green Diesel, Eni, Repsol, Total, and World Energy. Currently, eight facilities are operational, and more than 40 licensed plants are expected to be operational by 2030. Collectively, these plants will have a renewable fuels capacity exceeding 500,000 barrels per day when operating at peak efficiency.
Marcelo Cordaro, COO of Acelen Renewables, expressed the significance of integrating Honeywell’s Ecofining process into their operations. He stated, “The addition of Honeywell’s Ecofining process is essential for us to meet our goal of producing one billion liters of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation kerosene (SAF) per year from 2026 onwards, which will make our company one of the largest biofuel producers in the world. Through our ‘fully sustainable’ project – economically, socially, and environmentally responsible – we will demonstrate Brazil’s capacity to produce the fuel of the future.”
This partnership between Acelen Renewables and Honeywell signifies a major step forward in the production of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. By leveraging Ecofining technology, Acelen Renewables aims to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future in the aviation industry.
