The German President pays a visit to a floating solar installation in Thailand.

The President of the Federal Republic of Germany recently visited the Sirindhorn Dam in Ubon Ratchathani Province, Thailand, to witness the success of the world’s largest hydro-floating solar hybrid power plant. The visit was aimed at exchanging alternative energy cooperation, and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) provided information about the event.

The President’s primary objective is to achieve carbon neutrality in Germany, and as part of that effort, he visited the 45MW hydro-floating solar hybrid project at Sirindhorn Dam to explore electric power cooperation and investment opportunities. During the visit, he met with Captain Thamanat Phromphao, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Dr. Jiraporn Sirikum, Deputy Governor – Power Business and Acting Governor of EGAT, and other officials.

The President was briefed on EGAT’s mission and the project’s overview, which utilizes control system technology from Siemens. This project is the largest hydro-floating solar hybrid project in the world and EGAT’s first pilot project to combine solar power and hydropower. The aim is to overcome the limitations of power generation that depend on weather conditions.

EGAT has developed an energy management system (EMS) to optimize power generation, extend the generation duration, enhance the country’s energy security, and contribute to the goal of carbon neutrality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 47,000 tons/year. The project has been in commercial operation since October 2021.

The hydro-floating solar hybrid project at Sirindhorn Dam is one of 16 projects developed at nine dams across the country, with a total generating capacity of 2,725MW. This development aligns with the Power Development Plan (2018-2037) Revision 1. EGAT places great importance on developing electric power while improving the quality of life sustainably.

In addition to its energy benefits, the project is transforming Ubon Ratchathani Province into a new landmark. It features a nature walkway amidst beautiful scenery and serves as a learning center on renewable energy, creating jobs and income for the community while boosting the provincial economy.

EGAT has also signed a construction contract, in collaboration with MPD, for a 24 MW hybrid hydro-floating solar project at Ubol Ratana Dam in Khon Kaen Province, set to be completed in May 2023.
